NEW YORK

State Census 1855

===============

UPDATED FEBRUARY 25, 2024

NEW YORK 1855 STATE CENSUS

Matt Putnam loves to dig up info and he did this 1855 State and all I did was get it and do a teeny bit of editing. This was an ongoing project started in February 2021 and finished up in 6 weeks. He did a great job. The 1855 is a bit sketchy as large parts of the 1855 census were lost forever in a horrific fire at the New York State Archives in 1911. The stuff that survived were the pages that Counties somehow still had copies of. Even the counties that technically "survived" have many towns missing. 12 Counties were completely lost. They were: Suffolk, Queens, Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Clinton, Hamilton, Saint Lawrence, Tompkins, Seneca, Wyoming and Genesee. And then some of the Counties like Montgomery, Fulton, Schenectady, and nearby ones in 1855 and most other years had little if any New England Putnams and were dominated by the Dutch Poutman/Putman families. I drove through Schenectady once back in 1852 in my new horse drawn SUV heading over to Rochester and noticed for the first time that there was a huge sign just as you entered the County. The sign Said:

                                                   “DUTCH FOLKS ONLY

                                                NO ENGLISH NEED APPLY!”
